The Trials and Triumphs of Russell Accommodation: A Holiday Tale

Comments · 162 Views

I've become a big fan of russell accommodation - the corporate housing solution that offers the perfect balance of flexibility and homely comfort.

Like many Kiwis, I've long dreamed of someday taking an extended holiday up in the beautiful Bay of Islands. The charming colonial village of Russell has been high on my list, centrally located and brimming with history, culture, and absolutely jaw-dropping natural scenery.

Well, this past summer I finally pulled the trigger and booked three glorious weeks off work. My partner and I were headed to Russell to soak up the slower pace of life, do some hiking, get out on the water, and just completely unwind. Bliss, right?

Not so fast. Our biggest challenge was still to come in the form of securing our russell accommodation...

The Struggle is Real

I've heard the stories about how holiday rental pricing in Russell can get rather silly during the peak summer months. After dealing with the reality myself, I can confirm those tales are 100% accurate!

We started our search about 3 months out which, according to all the advice I'd read, should have been plenty of time. I was envisioning having my choice of any number of lovely waterfront apartments or luxury homes. Maybe we'd even find some off-season bargain if we were lucky!

Instead, what I found was a mortgage-inducingly small number of available properties that seemed to be getting smaller by the day as places got booked up. And the pricing...well, let's just say I had a few coughing fits after seeing some of those nightly rates.

The premium waterfront places were eye-watering even before adding things like linen fees and service charges. But the biggest sticker shock came from the "holiday pricing" many property managers tacked on - lump sums of $5,000 or more just to cover the peak Christmas/New Year period!

After a few weeks of having my enthusiasm firmly curbed, I finally managed to lock in what seemed like a decent option - a compact but charming heritage villa just a couple blocks back from the waterfront. The weekly pricing was still considerably higher than a standard Auckland Airbnb, but I told myself it would be worth it for a truly memorable Russell experience.

Russell Accommodation Mission: Accomplished!

When we finally rolled into Russell in mid-December, I have to admit I was a bit nervous about whether our digs would live up to expectations given the premium we paid. Those nerves were immediately erased as soon as we walked in the door.

While not an overly large or fancy property, our little heritage villa was perfectly formed for two people and overflowed with character and charm. The building's history oozed from every nook and cranny, having been lovingly maintained and curated over its 150+ years of existence.

Modern amenities allowed for all the usual creature comforts, but the aesthetic was pure colonial New Zealand - wooden floors, exposed beam ceilings, intricate decorative fretwork, and colorful arts and textiles around every corner. Our cozy little villa captured the spirit of Russell to an absolute tee and immediately immersed us in the laid-back seaside atmosphere we had come to experience.

The location was perfect too - close enough to the action that the beach, cafes, and waterfront were all just a couple minutes' stroll away. Yet it was tucked away on a quiet street in a residential neighborhood that shielded us from the holiday crowds when we wanted some peace and quiet. We really did have our cake and eat it too.

While I may have endured some sticker shock upfront, those issues quickly melted away once we were in the door and living out our holiday fantasies. Because that's what securing great Russell accommodation is really all about - creating a home base that allows you to maximize your enjoyment of this very special part of New Zealand.

Did I pay a premium price for the privilege? Absolutely, but I have zero regrets about it in retrospect. In fact, next time I'll probably try splurging for a waterfront place and really go all-out on the ultimate Russell holiday!

If you're planning a trip here yourself, just be aware that great accommodations do get snapped up very quickly, often well in advance. My advice is to be proactive, have a larger budget than normal, and maybe even work directly with a premium property manager who specializes in holiday rentals. It'll be worth it to wake up in paradise!

Was our first Russell holiday everything we dreamed it would be? I'll put it this way - we've already booked our next stay for this coming summer! The pursuit of incredible Russell accommodation may be arduous at times, but having that little slice of marine village heaven to return to makes it all worthwhile.
