Have you ever had that moment where you’re standing at your kitchen sink mindlessly washing your dirty dishes from that night's dinner and you finish up and once you remove the plug to drain the water, it either slowly drains or doesn’t drain at all? Well, that’s typically when it’s time to call a plumber.

Many homeowners have experienced this exact scenario and a lot of the time it’s due to different food residues and substances like oil or grease are being poured down the sinks drain. And when the wrong things get poured down the sinks drain it can cause the pipes to become clogged.

And if it’s not taken care of as soon as you notice the slow draining or lack thereof then it can lead to even more serious issues. Not only can sink drains get clogged but all of the drains in your home can experience blockages from time to time for many different reasons.

Keep reading to learn more about the different drains that can become clogged and the reasons behind each inconvenient blockage. There are ways to prevent clogged drains if you know what not to pour down them and how to clean them properly.

Clogged Sinks

The most common reason for a sink to become clogged is due to grease, hair, oil, or food residue left over from dirty dishes that accumulate inside of the drain pipes. The substances tend to start to stick to the walls of the pipes and eventually build-up so much that the water can no longer pass through with ease.

You should never pour coffee grounds, or grease down your sink drain. And as a tip for cleaning your sink drain you should run hot water down the drain every so often for a short period of time to wash away any residue that may be stuck to the walls of the pipes.

Clogged Toilets

You should never flush anything down your toilet except toilet paper and to be honest even that’s pushing it. Generally, the only thing that should really be going down your toilet drain is number one and number two.

Refrain from flushing feminine hygiene products, diapers, baby wipes, cotton swabs, or even dental floss down your toilet. If you do, chances are you will have a toilet with a major blockage on your hands which can lead to the toilet to start overflowing if not handled properly.

Clogged Bathtubs

Just like sinks, bathtub or shower drains tend to hang on to and collect large amounts of hair that is washed down the drains when you are showering, as well as oil, and soap residue. All of which will begin to harden in the drain pipe and lead to the pipes becoming clogged very easily.

Make sure you are using a bathtub stopper everytime you shower or take a bath. Also, don’t forget to remove all of the excess hair left over from your shower each time you use the bathtub. This can help to prevent future clogs from taking place in the first place.
