It is best to wipe up cooking spills as you make them, but that doesn't always happen. No matter how carefully you try to clean as you go, you sometimes have to clean burnt on food and grease from the grates and Gas Stove Protector on your gas stove. Fortunately, you don't have to turn to chemical cleaners. There are natural options available.

Cleaning Gas Stove Burners and Caps

If you have a cooktop with a pilot light, you’ll need to shut off the gas valve first. Gas burners have a removable ceramic cap that diffuses the flames. Beneath the caps, the burner head sits atop the gas tube. Remove the caps and the burner heads by carefully lifting them straight up. Avoid damaging the ignition electrode if you have one.

Soak the burner heads and caps in soap and warm water for 30 minutes. Scrub buildup from the burner heads and caps using a non-abrasive scrub pad and an old toothbrush. If the port openings are clogged, use a paper clip to clear them. Be careful not to damage the metal.

Ensure the burners and burner caps are thoroughly dried.

Replace the burner caps. Make sure to install them properly according to your owner’s manual.

Replace the cooking grates.

Steps Below to Clean Your Gas Burners

Remove the burner cap and burner base.

Clean the burner cap and base with a nonabrasive plastic scrubbing pad and mildly abrasive cleaner. The cooktop is easiest to clean as soon as the top, grates and caps are cool following cooking. Do not clean burner caps in the oven during a Self-Cleaning cycle.

Clean the gas tube opening under the base.

Gently clean the igniter with a damp cloth.

Clean clogged burner ports with a straight pin, needle, or small-gauge wire as shown below.

Reinstall the burner base and cap.

Make sure the alignment pins (if present) are properly adjusted with the burner cap and the correct burner cap is on the correct burner base.

The burner cap should fit flush with the burner base and have very little side to side movement.

Turn on the burner. If the burner does not light, check cap alignment and if the correct burner cap is on the correct burner base.
