The Universal Account Number, commonly referred to as UAN, is an exclusive 12-digit identifier assigned to each employee contributing to the EPF. Created and allocated by the Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO), its validity is endorsed by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India. Remarkably, an individual's UAN remains constant throughout their lifetime, irrespective of job transitions.

Upon switching jobs, the EPFO issues a fresh member ID or EPF Account (ID) linked to the existing UAN. To obtain a new member ID, an employee can provide the UAN to their new employer. Subsequently, this member ID is linked to the individual's UAN, effectively transforming the UAN into a unifying umbrella encompassing the various member IDs associated with the person across different employers
